Latisse Grows Eyelashes Back Longer, Thicker and Darker
The FDA has approved a new drug for making eyelashes grow longer. Called Latisse, this drug made by Allergan, clinically grows eyelashes longer and thicker. Allergan is the company that created Botox. Botox was a tremendous success for Allergan, Latisse is expected to enjoy similar success. Some background, Allergan originally created a drug to treat glaucoma called Lumigan. One of the most starling side effects of Lumigan was its ability to grow longer and thicker eyelashes. Allergan then created Latisse to take advantage of this effect. The active ingredient in both drugs is Bimatoprost. The FDA approved Latisse in December of 2008 to grow eyelashes longer.
Clinical Trial
In a clinical trial with about 280 members, half used Latisse daily for 16 weeks. (daily use involved eye-drops applied to upper eyelid). In that study, reviewed by the FDA, eyelashes typically grew 25% longer, 106% percent thicker and 18% darker.
Side Effects
In the study 3.6% of the patients experienced eye itching, no reported change of eye color. Because the study was of a short time period, experts worry long term use will affect the color of the irises. A few glaucoma patients using the stronger drug Lumigan (placed into the eye), had their irises permanently changed. Green and hazel eyes turned darker. Mr. Pyott of Allergan says that darker color irises are extremely unlikely with Latisse because each daily application to the lashes involves a 5% of the amount prescribed to glaucoma patients. Allergan assumes this concentration will dramatically lower risk. Other possible side effects were darkening of the eyelids.
Costs
Latisse will cost slightly more that Lumigan, (which is about $73 to $84 for a 2.5 milliliter bottle). It will be sold by percription only. Suggested retail price for a 30 day supply is $120.00 ( which includes 60 single use sterile applicators).
Use
Latisse is applied only to the upper eyelid, once a day. Typically results are noticed after 8 weeks, with full results after 16 weeks. You will need to keep using it to maintain the results. Once stopped lashes begin to return to their original state.
In studies, Latisse was tolerated well. Anyone considering using this, or any drug should discuss the specifics of their medical history with their doctor. This is a new way to grow eyelashes longer!
